Scoliosis 101: What Every Parent Should Know

Introduction
Scoliosis might sound scary, but it’s actually more common than most parents realize. About 2–3% of the population is affected by scoliosis (Scoliosis Research Society), and early detection can make a big difference in treatment outcomes.

What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine. In most cases, it develops during the growth spurt just before puberty.

Early Signs to Look For:

  • Uneven shoulders

  • One shoulder blade sticking out more

  • Uneven waist or hips

  • Clothes hanging unevenly

  • A visible curve when your child bends forward

Why Early Detection Matters
The earlier scoliosis is found, the better the chances of slowing or stopping the curve from getting worse without surgery.

What Parents Can Do:

  • Check your child’s posture regularly

  • Ask their school if they do scoliosis screenings

  • Visit your doctor if you notice changes
